Limber up by taking Yoga classes
Yoga is a great fitness class for newcomers as well as the more advanced. Yoga is not necessarily a test of your physical strength, but is meant to explore and improve your body's mental and physical alignment. Originating in India, there are many different types of yoga that have made their way into Western culture.
There are many benefits to yoga classes, whether you're adding them to your workout routines or they are your sole form of exercise. These benefits include increased flexibility and blood flow, muscle strengthening, improvement on chronic pain and also stress relief.
Types of Yoga Classes
There are too many types of yoga classes to name off here, but a few of the most popular include:
- Hatha yoga. Hatha yoga classes are considered to be slower-paced than many other types of yoga. They focus on teaching the foundations of yoga, which makes them great classes for beginners.
- Ashtanga and power yoga. An Ashtanga yoga class is a more intense yoga practice. It involves constant movement between poses, building out yoga "routines." It is the foundation for what many refer to as "power yoga," which is another intense form of yoga, though it is not so stringent on adhering to set poses.
- Kundalini. Kundalini yoga emphasizes breathing and movement working in tandem. Unlike yoga classes that are based on poses, Kundalini incorporates quick, repetitive movements.
- Bikram or hot yoga. Hot yoga is yoga practiced in a hot room, typically between 95 and 100 degrees Fahrenheit. This helps your muscles loosen up and encourages a cleansing sweat. If you're new to this type of yoga, try a Bikram's beginning yoga class to ease into it.
If you're not sure which type of yoga is right for you, look for facilities that offer introductory free yoga classes. That way, you can try out each type and find one that feels comfortable.

If you'd prefer to practice yoga on your own (a great option for people with home gyms or enough space to roll out a mat), try online yoga classes. Streaming videos from yoga instructors can help you work through the poses, giving you all the benefits of attending a yoga class. And, though yoga classes are often quite affordable to begin with, online yoga classes are typically free.
